Maroko Vol 2 Call Poster

Lagos International Poetry Festival Announces Open Call for Submissions for Márọkọ Issue II (Deadline: 21 August 2023)

LAGOS, Nigeria – July 1, 2023 – Márk, the annual print and digital journal proudly published by the Lagos International Poetry Festival, is excited to announce its call for submissions for its second issue.

This year’s issue is produced in partnership with the British Council’s International Collaboration programme. Alongside accepted submissions, the issue will also feature poems and essays from six resident poets and writers participating in the transatlantic and collaborative residency taking place in Scotland and Ghana.

The second issue’s theme, “Here and Now”, explores the shared global apprehension following the aftermath of the pandemic, capturing narratives of change, adaptation, and survival. Márọkọ invites submissions of poems, essays, and photography that reflect, protest, investigate, and articulate the personal impacts of these transformations.

The journal aims to serve as an international mosaic of voices, with writers bearing witness to these transformative times.

Submission guidelines are as follows:

Submissions must be original, previously unpublished work and can be sent from July 1st until August 20th, 2023. Multiple genres are accepted including poetry, reviews, profiles, personal essays, and visual art/photography.

Submissions should be formatted in 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, and sent as a Word Document to submissions@marokomag.com with the genre as the email subject. A short bio of no more than 150 words should be included with each submission. For full submission details, including specifics for each genre, visit www.marokomag.com/submit.

Márọkọ is proud to offer payment for selected submissions, with details available on our website. There is no submission fee required.

All enquiries can be sent to submissions@marokomag.com. The submission deadline is 11:59 PM, August 21, 2023.

The journal will be launched on October 29th, 2023 at the Lagos International Poetry Festival. We look forward to your submissions and the chance to amplify your voices and experiences in Márọkọ’s second issue.

About Márḱ

Named after the thriving migrant community east of the Lagos Lagoon who were violently evicted in the early 90s to make way for one of the most expensive real estate strips in the world, a garish urban sprawl built on the debris of over 300,000 scattered dreams, Márọkọ́ draws its ethos from the unbowed spirits that relentlessly confront the reckless possibilities of Lagos.

It renders the roughhewn beauties and joys that connect pan-African and pan-diasporic experiences, in poetry, prose, visual art, and photography, tracing a contemporary canon across the contours of contemporary black urban life.
