Three Poems | Peculiar Comfort Ene

FOR LINDA GABRIEL

These barren streets remind me of you,
of our plans, unhatched.
Your face, though fading like running clouds,
Reminds me of your beauty, never fading.

Your name, once soothing,
Now reminds me of pain.
Your name, now printed in red ink,
In the Anthology “Gone too soon”
I wish you didn’t pass for the entry.

UHURU

Beyond dark clouds of sorrow,
Into the welcoming arms of dawn,
The distant cock crow ushers in
a sweet melodic twittering of
morning twitters,
Of ancient songs of freedom,
Chants of chains and padlocks,
Of tears, reigns and ruins,
Of mountains, hills and valleys,
But UHURU is the only song we sing.

PEACE

There were times when bullets
like confetti lit up the night sky.
When tears became rivers,
And blood red carpets.
Tonight, the sky waves a flag,
The wind sings,
And the moon celebrates
with a smile.
I know for sure that there’ll be
peace at last.
