In an announcement made on the 4th of April 2025 by the African griot review, an avant-garde arts magazine, Nigerian writer, Haliru Ali Musa has emerged winner in the inaugural Alexander Nderitu prize for world literature with his captivating story, “The pregnant ghost”.

Following this announcement, the creative writer who hails from kastina, Nigeria will get a cash award of kshs 100,000, USD$ 770.00, a one-year-long campaign to promote his work and an option to be represented by an Asian literary agency.
Out of Seventy-one creatives from across 13 African countries including the United States who sent in their entries, the Nigerian creative has stamped Nigerian’s name in the sand of history.
Commenting on his win, Juror Pramudith D. Rupasinghe, Laureate of the Golden Aster Prize for Global Literature affirms the historic stamping. “A prize that certainly showcases Africa’s emergence in global literary scene…Africa’s has always been the cradle for human stories; the continent’s wordsmiths have reached the global stage in spite of scarce opportunities. The Alexander Nderitu Prize is more than an award; it’s a meeting point where the rich tapestry of African storytelling intersects with the global literary landscape, resulting in a powerful exchange of ideas and perspectives. The 2024 edition showcased the continent’s unmatched storytelling prowess, with writers crafting narratives of exceptional depth and complexity. The entries were living witness to how African writers who write in English use it to weave narratives steeped in the painful echoes of colonialism, their words imbued with anger, sorrow, and the fragile hope for a better future; sharing their stories with the world.”
Haliru Ali Musa is an engineer with a passion for storytelling. He was recently nominated to participate in the esteemed NAL creative writing capacity workshop, where he was mentored by renowned author Obinna Udenwe.
