Apply: Poetic Wednesdays Poetry Workshop

Poetic Wednesdays initiative is inviting the general public to apply for its online poetry workshop that’s coming up on the 1st to 5th of March, 2022

The workshop will be facilitated by Ismail Bala, author of Line of Sight (Praxis Books) and Umar Abubakar Sidi, author of The Poet of Dust (Konya Shamsrumi)

Poetic Wednesdays is a youth-oriented non-governmental, non-political and non-partisan literary organization which focuses on promoting, encouraging and inspiring young people to unleash their creativity and tap into their literary passion by providing them with a platform to network and interact with others. It supports Goal 4 (Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities) and Goal 9 (Building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization and fostering innovation) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Its operations are both online and offline, with special focus on young adults from Northern Nigeria and hopefully to the rest of the country in the not distant future.

MEET THE FACILITATORS:

ISMAIL BALA

Ismail Bala writes in English and Hausa. His poetry and translations have appeared in the UK, the USA, Canada, India and South Africa, in journals such as Poetry Review, Ambit, New Coin, Ake Review, Lunaris, A Review of International English Literature and Aura Literary Arts Review, among many others. Born and educated to university level in Kano, he did his post-graduate studies at Oxford. Line of Sight (Praxis Books, 2020) is his first collection. His poems have been translated into Latvian, Belarusian and Polish. He is a Fellow of the International Writing Programme of the University of Iowa.

UMAR ABUBAKAR SIDI

Umar Abubakar Sidi is a Nigerian poet and naval helicopter pilot. His work appears in Praxis Magazine, Brittle Paper, Afapinen, and elsewhere in reputable magazines across African. He is the author of the poetry collection, The Poet of Dust (Konya Shamsrumi, 2019)
Sidi has read and discussed his poetry collection in more than five Nigerian cities, including the federal capital territory, Abuja. Some of his poems were performed and rendered into poetry films.
He lives in Lagos, Nigeria.

SAI Sabouke
Sai Sabouke is a writer living in New Bussa, Nigeria. He’s a dervish who sees Sufism, history and language as formidable tools for society regeneration. His writing has appeared in Praxis Magazine Online and Agbowo. Sabouke loves beans, coffee and dreams of roasting the entrails of vultures.
