Nigerian poet
The death has been announced of the poet, Shehu Shagari, who, from 1979 to 1983, was President of Nigeria.
The late political leader was born in Shagari Village in 1925. He studied at the Teacher’s Training College, Zaria, graduating with a certificate in 1952. He taught briefly in Sokoto before joining active politics. Over the next two decades, he held a series of high offices. In 1979, he was elected president of Nigeria under the platform of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the Second Republic. The Second Republic was truncated by a military coup on the 31st of December, 1983.
Shehu Shagari is best known for the highly nationalistic Wakar Nigeria (NNPC, 1973). He died at the National Hospital in Abuja on December 28th, 2018.
