to the men who walked into darkness,
shadows swallowing their scalloped tongues
they wear smiles that don’t fit their teeth
to the men who open God’s book
with their burnt fingers,
in search of the aftermath of grief,
learning to gather the shards of hope.
to the men who watched the earth
eat their brothers’ corpses,
the sea drowning their names,
the clouds painting blood into their cities.
to the men who bask
in the muddy water of depression,
who have forgotten what the home
of peace looks like,
surely, they’ll all come home.
