The Weight of Years is the second collection after Selves, and here we have 15 contributors that represent different countries in Africa, each with a story carefully selected by our team of curators.
Below is a note from Basit Jamiu on behalf of the curators:
At AfroAnthology Series, we are excited about our curatorial revolution for creative nonfiction. Barely two years ago, we published Selves. It became a hot cake, so widely acclaimed that pieces from it have won an award or shortlisted for major creative nonfiction prizes in Africa, and they are continuously being discussed at prestigious literary festivals.
Can creative nonfiction find a bigger home in Africa? Is it fully locating its lovers? Has it been embraced like its two sisters — poetry and fiction? The great literary goddess, Ellah Alfrey Wakatama, concluded in Safe House that creative nonfiction in Africa is at its germinal stage. It is easy to agree if you are in touch with the progress of literary output in Africa, of which creative nonfiction represents the smallest of the total percentage.
At AfroAnthology Series, we take the words of Ellah as a cue to do more, to expand the scope and quality of creative nonfiction from Africa, and, lastly, to be an archive for some of the best pieces written by African writers, so that both present and future generation will find it easier to know where to check when they need a map in creative nonfiction.
The Weight of Years is the second collection after Selves, and here we have 15 contributors that represent different countries in Africa, each with a story carefully selected by our team of curators. Every story in this collection has a pulse, a powerful yet tender way of looking at both the self and the world.
